EVANGÉLIUM ELŐTTI VERS

*† EVANGÉLIUM Szent Máté könyvéből Jócselekedeteinkkel ne az emberek
elismerését keressük, hanem egyedül Istentől várjunk értük jutalmat! A
hegyi beszédben Jézus így szólt tanítványaihoz: Vigyázzatok! Jótetteitekkel
ne hivalkodjatok az emberek előtt, mert így a mennyei Atyától nem kaptok
értük jutalmat. Amikor tehát alamizsnát osztasz, ne kürtöltess magad előtt,
mint a képmutatók teszik a zsinagógákban és az utcákon, hogy dicsérjék őket
az emberek! Bizony mondom nektek, ezzel már meg is kapták jutalmukat.
Amikor te adsz alamizsnát, ne tudja bal kezed, mit cselekszik a jobb kezed,
hogy adományod rejtekben legyen, és akkor Atyád jutalmaz meg érte, aki lát
téged a rejtekben is. Amikor pedig imádkoztok, ne legyetek olyanok, mint a
képmutatók, akik szeretnek az emberek szeme láttára a zsinagógákban és az
utcasarkokon állva imádkozni! Bizony mondom nektek, már meg is kapták
jutalmukat. Amikor imádkozol, menj be a szobádba, és zárt ajtó mögött, a
rejtekben imádkozzál Atyádhoz! Atyád, aki a rejtekben is lát, megfizet
neked. Amikor böjtöltök, ne legyetek mogorvák, mint a képmutatók! Keserű
arcot mutatnak, hogy az emberek meglássák rajtuk a böjtölést. Bizony mondom
nektek, ezzel már meg is kapták jutalmukat. Amikor te böjtölsz, illatosítsd
be hajadat és mosd meg arcodat, hogy az emberek ne vegyék észre
böjtölésedet, csak Atyád, aki a rejtekben jelen van! Atyád, aki a rejtekben
is lát, megfizet neked. Ezek az evangélium igéi. *

* Friends, today’s Gospel prescribes the disciplines of prayer, fasting,
and almsgiving. I want to speak about the biblical principle behind
almsgiving. I know I’ve quoted to you before some of the breathtaking
remarks of saints and popes. For example, Pope Leo XIII said, “Once the
demands of necessity and propriety have been met, the rest of your money
belongs to the poor.” St. John Chrysostom said—and St. Ambrose echoed
him—“For the man who has two shirts in his closet, one belongs to him; the
other belongs to the man who has no shirt.” These ideas are, of course,
rooted in the biblical prophets, who continually rail against those who are
indifferent to the poor.Compassion is key to Christian ethics, learning to
suffer with and feel with the other. We’re not dealing with an abstract
Aristotelian moral philosophy, but rather with something more visceral.This
is precisely why the two great commandments are so tightly linked: “Love
the Lord your God with all your heart . . . and love your neighbor as
yourself.” In loving God, you feel the feelings of God, and God is
compassionate to the poor and oppressed. That’s all the argument that a
biblical person needs. *
*Fast from hurting words and say kind words.*
*Fast from sadness and be filled with gratitude.*
*Fast from anger and be filled with patience.*
*Fast from pessimism and be filled with hope.*
*Fast from worries and have trust in God.*
*Fast from complaints; contemplate simplicity.*
*Fast from pressures and be prayerful.*
*Fast from bitterness; fill your hearts with joy.*
*Fast from selfishness and be compassionate.*
*Fast from grudges and be reconciled.*
*Fast from words; be silent and listen*.  *(Pope Francis)*
