  Friends, in today’s Gospel, Jesus teaches us what to expect in the times
between his first and second coming.

*He warns against false messiahs: "Many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am
he’ and ‘The time has come.’ Do not follow them!"* One of the marks of the
in-between times is that false messiahs will arise, those who claim to
represent God and the purposes of God. Even a casual survey of the last two
thousand years reveals the validity of this observation. Various political
leaders, social reformers, dictators, gurus, and artists have claimed an
ultimate authority. We have seen a plethora of such figures in very recent
times. They are all representatives of the old world, even as they claim to
represent the new.

Jesus also alerts us to expect international wars: "When you hear of wars
and insurrections, do not be terrified. . . . Nation will rise against
nation, and kingdom against kingdom." When an animal is threatened and
wounded, he will fight even more fiercely. There is a terrible instability
to the sinful world—lashing out, judging, attacking, bluffing, conquering
and being conquered. That is simply the way of the nations in the grip of
sin.
