Our next panel discussion will focus on the idea of liberalism within the
Western tradition. This topic is especially relevant in Hungary considering
the popular conversation sparked by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s speech of
July 25, 2014 in Baile Tusnad, not to mention different understandings of
“liberalism” from Moscow, to Washington, D.C., Beijing, and Brussels, and
most recently in the wake of the Charlie Hebdo attack. As both a
philosophical matter and practical reality, does liberalism represent a
strength or a threat to free societies?
