Kedves Listatagok!

A sajtó szerint vélhetőleg támogatni fogja az Európai Parlament jövő
héten Tonio Borg európai uniós biztosi kinevezését. A frakciók és az EP
vezetésének nyilatkozataiból úgy tűnik, a jelenlegi máltai

álláspontján pont ezekben a kérdésekben.

A Family Watch International felhívása angolul, alatta a magyarországi
eu-képviselők listája emilcímekkel.

We are urging you to call or email your country’s members of the
European Parliament in support of the nomination of Maltese candidate
Mr. Tonio Borg as EU Health and Consumer Protection Commissioner.

A coalition of homosexual activist groups and their allies strongly
oppose Mr. Borg’s nomination because of his religious beliefs and
personal views regarding the family, homosexuality, marriage and
abortion. They claim that these personal and religious beliefs do not
conform to “European values.”

Last week, Mr. Borg was interviewed for this appointment by several
committees of the EU Parliament and unequivocally demonstrated that he
is well qualified to assume the position as EU Health and Consumer
Protection Commissioner. The opposition to his candidacy is not based
on his qualifications or competency, but a result of his personal values
and beliefs, and this reality raises several troubling issues.

As we point out in the letter Family Watch sent to one of the chairmen
of one of the lead EU committees considering Mr. Borg’s qualifications
(attached below), if the parliament rejects his candidacy it will
violate both the spirit and the letter of the fundamental rights of
freedom of conscience, belief and opinion that are among the core values
on which the European Union is founded as reflected in the Charter of
Fundamental Rights. It would be a terrible precedent for parliament to
succumb to this baseless pressure campaign.

It is also disturbing that the groups opposing the nomination represent
individuals who are demanding that they be accorded tolerance and
acceptance of their lifestyle and values, but who are not willing to be
tolerant and accepting of those who have different beliefs and values.
To allow such hypocrisy to derail Mr. Borg’s candidacy for this position
would set a terrible precedent.

It would be most unfortunate if these extremist groups are allowed to
define “European values,” which would only encompass values in line with
their own beliefs. As we note, the fundamental founding documents of
the European Union should define “European values” And not a few extreme
groups. This nomination event is thus an important test of whether the
EU will continue to live by its fundamental founding values.

The vote on Mr. Borg’s nomination as EU Health and Consumer Protection
Commissioner is expected in parliament on Wednesday, so time is short.
We urge you to take a few minutes to email or call your MEPs and urge
them to support his nomination to this post. You might want to use some
of the points we raised in our letter attached below. When you contact
the EU members representing your country we suggest you expressly let
them know you are one of their constituents.

There are reports that many MEPs are still undecided on how they will
vote, so it is important that they hear from you. You can find the
members representing your country here.

Thank you for your efforts to defend family values, tolerance and
religious freedom.

Sincerely,
Sharon Slater
